Telecommunications :a innovative sector in Djibouti

Situation

The telecommunication in Djibouti is definite as social link creating sector; this latter represents a substantial range of appropriate products and services around which are based on three axis: land telephony, mobile telephony and the Internet.

Tanks to the geographic position and its regional integration policy, the region is seen as a telecommunication transit way, enabled by the existence of interconnection underwater cables between Europe and Asia which lead to the development of international network that makes Djibouti a hub of telecommunications.

Innovation, spearhead of our future

Thus in order to answer to the growing professional sector clients and private individuals, the company has undertaken important investments on human plan as well as on technical or commercial plan. Started in March 2003, the deployment of optical fibre infrastructure has enabled to significantly improve phone communications. Professionals and private individuals can thus, benefit from personalized high-speed solutions by making optical fibre one of the successes, as a mean to ease congestion in urban distribution network and then complete its quality in the same time. This project enables to expend the adsl in the different remotest areas of districts and will then provide a better added value by the interconnection created between the different networks or sites. The initial network made up of 43 partner operators has already enabled foreign visitors to phone from their mobile without changing their habits.

The company continues its aim of spreading roaming access to all its Evatis mobile network subscribers, when they travelling abroad.

Prospect

The telecommunications will contribute every day, through many substantial projects, to make Djibouti an international and regional platform. Those projects are:

·        The development of regional hub through underwater cable investments EASSY linking east African countries, from Sudan to South Africa

·        The creation of an international Djibouti Telecom subsidiary in free zone so as to benefit from tax benefits and thus exploit our hub in an optimum way.    

 Located on the junction between the East and the West, on the East / South African axis as well as Middle East / Gulf axis, Djibouti Telecom is in an attractive and strategic position for international and national investors who want to have a regional relay. In fact, the transit idea can be developed.
